A Building Born from a Battle

Centennial Hall was built to mark an anniversary, but the story behind that anniversary began far from Wrocław. In 1813, one of the largest battles in European history took place near Leipzig, where Napoleon faced a coalition of Russian, Prussian, Austrian and Swedish forces. The Battle of the Nations ended in Napoleon's defeat and became one of the events that marked the beginning of the end of his empire.

One hundred years later, Wrocław — then known as Breslau — prepared a major exhibition to commemorate the events of 1813. The anniversary was linked both to the Battle of Leipzig and to the famous Prussian appeal An mein Volk, issued that year by King Frederick William III. For the exhibition, the city needed a building capable of bringing together thousands of people under one roof. The result was something nobody had seen before.

The Concrete Giant That Changed Architecture

The project was given to Wrocław's city architect, Max Berg, who proposed a monumental building made almost entirely of reinforced concrete. At the time, it was a remarkably bold idea. When Centennial Hall opened in 1913, its enormous dome had a span of 65 metres, making it the largest reinforced-concrete dome in the world at the time.

The building could accommodate up to 10,000 people and was designed as a genuinely multifunctional space for exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances, sporting events and large public gatherings. More than a century later, the exposed concrete structure still feels surprisingly modern — perhaps because Berg deliberately avoided unnecessary decoration and allowed the architecture and engineering to speak for themselves.

More Than Just a Hall

Centennial Hall was only one part of a much larger exhibition complex. The grounds around it were developed together with structures such as the Pergola and the Four Domes Pavilion, while the surrounding area connected the new architecture with Szczytnicki Park and the Japanese Garden.

The hall itself has continued to serve the purpose for which it was created. More than a hundred years after its opening, it remains a venue for concerts, exhibitions, conferences and major events. In 2006, its importance was recognised internationally when Centennial Hall and the surrounding Exhibition Grounds were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Today, it is easy to see Centennial Hall simply as one of Wrocław's landmarks. But its story is much bigger than that. It began with a battle against Napoleon, continued with an architectural experiment that pushed reinforced concrete further than ever before, and resulted in a building that still defines this part of the city more than a century later.
