A palace built for a remarkable collection

Just a few minutes from Kraków's Main Market Square, a quiet entrance on Piłsudskiego Street leads to a small museum complex with a surprisingly rich story.

At its heart stands the 19th-century Czapski Palace, built in 1884 for Count Emeryk Hutten-Czapski. A passionate numismatist, bibliophile, and collector of Polish memorabilia, he spent decades gathering coins, medals, banknotes, books, maps, and works of art.

His collection eventually became so important that a private museum was opened here in 1901. Two years later, his family donated it to the National Museum in Kraków, turning a private passion into one of Poland's most important historical collections.

A collection saved from history

The idea behind the collection is captured in a Latin inscription on the museum pavilion:

Monumentis Patriae naufragio ereptis

— "To the monuments of the homeland rescued from the storm of history."

Inside, small objects tell much bigger stories. The permanent exhibition presents some of the most valuable pieces from the National Museum's numismatic collection, including rare Polish coins, medals, banknotes, old books, maps, and manuscripts.

You don't have to be a collector to enjoy it. Part of the charm is discovering how much history can be contained in something small enough to hold in your hand.

A hidden garden in the heart of Kraków

The museum doesn't end when you leave the exhibition rooms. Behind the palace is a historic garden that has preserved its 19th-century character, with mature trees, quiet paths, and a lapidarium containing fragments of Kraków's historic architecture.

Among the most unusual pieces is an original 14th-century pinnacle from St. Mary's Basilica. It is an easy detail to miss, but exactly the kind of thing worth looking out for when wandering through the garden.

The complex also includes the Pawilon Józefa Czapskiego, dedicated to Emeryk Hutten-Czapski's grandson — a painter, writer, and intellectual. The pavilion tells his story through paintings, diaries, personal objects, and a reconstruction of his room from the headquarters of the literary magazine Kultura near Paris.

After exploring the exhibitions, there is a good reason to stay a little longer. The pavilion has a café and terrace, while the garden offers benches and tables beneath the trees.

It is one of those Kraków spots where you can see an important museum collection, wander through a historic garden, and stop for coffee without ever feeling like you've left the centre of the city.
