Historic Cemeteries on Ogrodowa Street, Łódź

Visiting a cemetery may not be at the top of everyone's travel list. But in Łódź, a walk through the historic cemeteries on Ogrodowa Street reveals something that is harder to see in the city today: the multicultural society that helped shape its industrial rise.

Established in 1855, the complex was divided into three sections for different Christian denominations: Roman Catholic, Evangelical and Orthodox. They stand side by side, reflecting the religious diversity of 19th-century Łódź.

A Cemetery of Three Denominations

The three sections have distinct characters, but together they form one of the city's most important historic sites. The Catholic section is dedicated to St. Joseph, the Evangelical section to St. Matthew, while the Orthodox cemetery is associated with St. Alexander Nevsky.

The cemeteries became the final resting place of factory owners, merchants, artists, doctors, teachers and other residents who helped build modern Łódź. Their graves offer a different way of reading the city's history — not through factories and palaces, but through the people who created them.

Monumental Tombs and Works of Art

Many of the graves are remarkable works of funerary art. Monumental mausoleums, sculptures and elaborate tombs were designed by recognised architects and craftsmen.

The Evangelical section is particularly rich in the tombs of Łódź's industrial families, including the Scheiblers, Grohmans, Geyers, Biedermanns and Kunitzers. The most spectacular is the Neo-Gothic mausoleum of the Scheibler family, built between 1885 and 1888. Designed by Edward Lilpop and Józef Dziekoński, it is one of the finest examples of 19th-century funerary architecture in Poland.

The Catholic section also has its monumental landmarks, including the Heinzel family mausoleum, built at the beginning of the 20th century.

Where Different Worlds Meet

One of the most unusual monuments is the tomb chapel of the Gojżewski family, standing on the boundary between the Catholic and Orthodox sections. The married couple belonged to different denominations — he was Orthodox and she was Catholic — and they were buried on opposite sides of the chapel.

Small gates next to the chapel connect the two sections, creating a striking symbol of the religious diversity that was part of everyday life in historic Łódź.

Today, the cemeteries preserve not only the memory of the people buried here, but also a fragment of the city's multicultural past. Walking between the old trees, chapels and elaborate tombs is a quiet way to see another side of Łódź — one shaped by industry, migration and different communities living alongside one another.
