The rooms where Kraków's most famous historical painter lived and worked reveal the person behind the monumental paintings.
The house where Jan Matejko lived and worked
Walking along Floriańska Street, it is easy to pass the entrance without realising that behind it is the house where one of Poland's most famous painters was born, lived with his family, created his most important works, and died in 1893.
Jan Matejko spent much of his life here, eventually buying out his siblings' shares in the family property. The historic tenement, which dates back to the 16th century and was remodelled in the 18th and 19th centuries, became closely connected with both his private life and his artistic career.
Today, the rooms have been preserved as a biographical museum, giving visitors something that a traditional gallery cannot: a glimpse into the surroundings in which the artist actually lived and worked.
Much more than paintings
The collection goes far beyond Matejko's famous historical scenes. More than 6,000 objects connected with the artist and his family are preserved here, including paintings, drawings, letters, photographs, books, furniture, clothing, weapons, textiles, and everyday objects.
Some of the most interesting pieces reveal how Matejko worked. He collected historic objects that could help him understand the past and often used them as references or props while creating his paintings. The collection includes examples of historical costumes, weapons, decorative arts, and other objects that inspired his work.
Among the more unusual items is a collection of historic torture instruments that Matejko saved from destruction during restoration work on the tower of Kraków's former town hall.
His fascination with Kraków can also be seen in the designs for the polychrome decoration of St. Mary's Basilica, created between 1889 and 1891. These works later influenced the younger generation of artists, including Stanisław Wyspiański and Józef Mehoffer.
Jan Matejko, The Battle of Grunwald, 1878
Without a doubt, Matejko's most recognisable work. The gigantic canvas covers an area larger than many apartments. It stands over four metres high and almost ten metres wide. It is hard to think of the Battle of Grunwald, fought on 15 July 1410, without picturing this painting — even though it is not a reconstruction of the battle, but Matejko's artistic vision of it.
