A Garden That Almost Disappeared
The Japanese Garden in Wrocław looks like it has always belonged here. Hidden inside Szczytnicki Park, it is now one of the city's quietest corners. But the garden visitors see today is actually the result of several attempts to save it.
It was first created in 1913 for the Centennial Exhibition, with Japanese gardener Mankichi Arai helping to design the space. When the exhibition ended, much of the garden disappeared and its original character gradually faded.
Destroyed, Rebuilt and Saved Again
Decades later, Wrocław began working with Japanese specialists to recreate the garden. After years of restoration, it finally reopened in 1997 — only for the great flood to hit Wrocław a few months later, almost completely destroying the newly restored garden.
The garden had to be rebuilt once again and reopened in 1999. What looks today like a peaceful landscape of water, bridges and carefully arranged plants is the result of more than a century of creation, loss and reconstruction.
You can easily walk through the garden without knowing any of this. But once you do, this quiet corner of Wrocław feels a little different.
