As visitors follow the winding path to the top of the mound, the panorama gradually opens across Kraków. Church towers, historic districts and the curve of the Vistula River become visible, creating one of the most memorable viewpoints in the city.
On exceptionally clear days, distant mountain ranges can even be seen on the horizon. The calm atmosphere and open space offer a refreshing contrast to the lively streets of the Old Town.
A monument built by the people
Construction of the mound began in 1820 and was funded entirely by public contributions. Residents from across the region carried soil to the site as a symbolic tribute to Tadeusz Kościuszko, a military leader remembered for his fight for freedom and equality.
Earth from battlefields connected with his campaigns was placed inside the mound, turning it into a symbolic memorial rather than a traditional grave. In later decades, defensive walls and fortifications were added as part of Kraków’s fortress system.
Today the site combines a historic monument, museum spaces and preserved military architecture.
