Once a limestone extraction site, today it resembles a forgotten landscape where steep cliffs, wild vegetation and layered history meet in one dramatic setting.
Far from the crowds of the Old Town, this place reveals a different side of Kraków — quiet, raw and slightly untamed. Limestone walls rise above open clearings and winding paths, creating a striking natural and post-industrial scenery.
From industrial quarry to historical site
Liban Quarry was established in the late 19th century as part of Kraków’s expanding limestone industry. The stone extracted here was used in construction projects across the city, contributing to its rapid development.
During World War II, the quarry became connected to the nearby Płaszów forced labor camp, adding a difficult historical chapter to its past. After the war the quarry was gradually abandoned, and nature slowly reclaimed the area.
Today visitors encounter rugged cliffs, open spaces and vegetation growing over the former industrial terrain.
A dramatic landscape and film location
The quarry’s striking scenery has also attracted filmmakers. Its limestone cliffs and post-industrial character appeared in the Polish Netflix series “Krakowskie potwory”, where the location served as a dramatic natural backdrop.
Because the site remains largely untouched by urban development, it offers an atmosphere very different from Kraków’s historic squares and monuments. Walkers, photographers and urban explorers often visit the quarry for its unique perspective on the city.
