Imagine a fortress so vast that it became the capital of one of medieval Europe's most powerful states. Rising above the Nogat River, Malbork Castle served as the seat of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, combining the roles of a monastery, fortress and political centre.

Today, it is recognised as the world's largest brick castle and one of Poland's most extraordinary historical landmarks. Walking through its courtyards, halls and defensive walls feels like stepping back into the Middle Ages.

A Fortress That Became a Capital

Construction of the castle began in the late 13th century, when the Teutonic Knights established a fortified monastery on the banks of the Nogat River. Everything changed in 1309, when the Grand Master moved the Order's capital from Venice to Malbork.

From that moment, the castle expanded rapidly. New wings, defensive walls and representative buildings transformed it into the political and administrative heart of the Teutonic Order, making Malbork one of the most important fortified complexes in medieval Europe.

Three Castles in One

Although it appears to be a single fortress, Malbork actually consists of three interconnected sections, each with its own purpose.

The High Castle served as the monastery of the Teutonic Knights. The Middle Castle became the residence of the Grand Masters and the administrative centre of the Order, while the Outer Bailey housed workshops, kitchens, stables, warehouses and other buildings needed for everyday life.

Together, these sections created a self-sufficient complex where religious, political and military life existed side by side.

More Than a Fortress

Malbork was designed not only for defence but also for everyday life.

Within its walls you'll discover cloisters, chapels, kitchens, warehouses and the magnificent Great Refectory, one of Europe's largest medieval dining halls. The impressive Palace of the Grand Masters reflects the wealth and influence the Teutonic Order once held across the Baltic region.

Look for the remarkable Dansker — a fortified toilet tower connected to the castle by a covered bridge. It may sound unusual today, but it was an advanced sanitary solution for its time and remains one of Malbork's most distinctive architectural features.

A Castle Rebuilt for Future Generations

Malbork Castle suffered severe damage during World War II, but decades of careful restoration brought the fortress back to life. Thanks to this remarkable conservation effort, visitors can once again experience one of Europe's finest examples of Gothic brick architecture.

In 1997, the castle was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognising its outstanding historical and architectural significance.
