Long before tourists filled Gdańsk's waterfront cafés, the Motława River was the city's busiest highway. Merchant ships arrived here carrying grain, timber, salt and countless other goods, helping Gdańsk grow into one of the wealthiest ports on the Baltic Sea.

Today, the Motława is the heart of the city's historic waterfront. Lined with medieval architecture, riverside promenades and historic ships, it remains one of the best places to experience Gdańsk's maritime heritage.

The River That Shaped a City

The Motława River has been closely connected with Gdańsk since the Middle Ages. Historical records mention it as early as 1280, while its name is believed to have Old Prussian origins. Over the centuries, the river became the city's most important transport route, linking Gdańsk with inland Poland and the Baltic Sea.

As trade expanded, the waterfront filled with warehouses, cranes, quays and merchant houses. Goods arriving from across Europe were unloaded here before continuing their journey inland, while Polish grain, timber and other products were shipped overseas from the same riverbanks.

More Than a River

The Motława did more than support trade — it shaped the layout of Gdańsk itself.

In the 16th century, engineers created the New Motława (Nowa Motława), a new waterway that improved navigation and strengthened the city's defences. This ambitious engineering project also created Granary Island, where hundreds of granaries once stored goods waiting to be exported across Europe.

Walking along the river today, you'll pass many of Gdańsk's best-known landmarks, including the Crane (Żuraw), the Long Embankment (Długie Pobrzeże), historic gates and beautifully restored merchant houses that once overlooked one of Europe's busiest ports.

Life on the Waterfront Today

Although cargo ships have long disappeared from the historic centre, the Motława remains one of Gdańsk's liveliest places.

Sightseeing boats, historic vessels, riverside cafés and evening walks have replaced medieval merchants, while the waterfront continues to attract both locals and visitors throughout the year.

Look for the reflections of the historic buildings in the water — especially around sunset, when the riverside becomes one of the city's most photogenic locations.

On rare winter days, the Motława freezes over completely, creating one of Gdańsk's most unusual sights. You might even spot adventurous locals and tourists tempted to walk across the ice. It certainly makes for unforgettable photos—but we'd recommend enjoying the view from solid ground instead.

The New Motława isn't a natural river. It was artificially dug in the 16th century to improve navigation and strengthen Gdańsk's defences. The project also created what is now Granary Island, one of the city's most recognizable districts.
