Beneath the Streets of Wrocław

Just a few steps from the Market Square, there is a door that leads somewhere completely unexpected. Beneath Plac Solny, MovieGate occupies a former wartime shelter hidden around six metres below the surface. The underground complex was built during World War II and could accommodate up to 300 people. Today, its preserved rooms have become an attraction where history unexpectedly meets cinema.

The bunker itself is part of the experience. Original inscriptions and elements of the wartime interior have survived, while reconstructed scenes help show what life inside such a shelter could have looked like. Walking through the narrow underground rooms, it is easy to forget that you are standing directly beneath one of the busiest parts of central Wrocław.

A Bunker with a Hollywood Collection

Then the story takes an unexpected turn. Among the historic spaces, MovieGate displays original costumes, props and pieces of film set design connected with major productions. The collection includes items associated with films such as Star Wars, The Matrix, Gladiator, Inglourious Basterds and other well-known productions.

MovieGate is not only about film, however. The underground route also combines the bunker with science experiments, illusion and stories connected with the history of Wrocław and Lower Silesia. It is an unusual mixture, but that is exactly what makes the place memorable: one moment you are looking at a wartime wall, the next at a Hollywood artefact.

MovieGate feels less like a traditional museum and more like discovering several completely different attractions hidden behind the same underground door. And that contrast is probably its biggest surprise — above you, Plac Solny is full of city life; below, there is a bunker where Wrocław's wartime past meets the world of cinema.
