Museum of Cinematography in Łódź – Inside a Film Palace
Explore the history of Polish cinema inside a 19th-century industrialist's palace that became a film location itself.
Where Łódź Became a City of Cinema
Łódź and cinema have been connected for generations, and there is perhaps no better place to explore that relationship than the Museum of Cinematography. The museum is housed in the historic palace of Karol and Anna Scheibler, one of the most important industrial families in 19th-century Łódź. Here, the history of the city, the development of Polish cinema and the story of one remarkable building come together.
The palace itself is part of the experience. Its historic interiors have appeared in dozens of films and television productions, turning the museum into something more than a collection of film memorabilia. It is also a place where the industrial history of Łódź meets the city's later identity as one of Poland's great centres of cinema.
From Industrial City to Film City
The permanent exhibition Film Łódź tells the story of how Łódź changed from a city of textile factories, workers and popular entertainment into one of the most important centres of Polish film production. The exhibition places cinema within the wider history of the city, showing how closely Łódź became associated with filmmaking.
This connection is one of the reasons the museum feels particularly at home in Łódź. The city that was once shaped by enormous textile factories later became known for film studios, directors, actors and the famous Łódź Film School. The museum brings these two chapters of the city's history together.
A Palace That Became a Film Set
The Museum of Cinematography has been based in the former Scheibler Palace since 1986. Built in the 19th century, the palace once belonged to Karol and Anna Scheibler and formed part of the industrial empire that helped shape Łódź. Today, its historic rooms provide the setting for exhibitions about cinema while preserving the atmosphere of the world in which the city's industrial elite once lived.
The interiors have also had a life on screen. They were used as locations for numerous films and television productions, including Andrzej Wajda's The Promised Land (Ziemia obiecana) from 1974. Walking through the palace therefore means moving through both the history of Łódź and places that have become part of the visual history of Polish cinema.
More Than a Museum of Old Films
The museum's collections go far beyond film posters and cameras. Its programme combines exhibitions, education, film screenings and events, while its collections are also available through an online catalogue. The museum also presents objects connected with the history of Polish film, animation and visual culture.
One of the most distinctive parts of the museum is its collection of animated-film characters and materials. For Polish visitors, figures such as Miś Uszatek, Reksio, Bolek i Lolek or Filemon and Bonifacy bring back memories of childhood. For international visitors, they offer a glimpse into a particularly rich part of Polish animation.
Cinema Is Still Alive Here
The museum's own cinema, Kinematograf, continues the story beyond the exhibitions. It screens films, hosts meetings and discussions and creates a space where historic and contemporary cinema can meet.
That makes the Museum of Cinematography particularly fitting for Łódź. The city did not simply preserve its cinematic past — it continues to build on it. Inside the former palace of one of its great industrial families, the history of Łódź's factories, films and people comes together in one place.
