Museum of the Second World War – A Journey Through Human Stories in Gdańsk
Discover one of Europe's most remarkable museums, where personal stories, immersive exhibitions and history come together beneath the streets of Gdańsk.
Some museums tell the story of wars. This one tells the story of the people who lived through them. The Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk explores one of history's darkest chapters through the experiences of civilians, soldiers and children whose lives were forever changed by the conflict.
Rather than focusing only on military campaigns, the museum asks a different question: what was everyday life like during the war? The answer unfolds through thousands of authentic objects, personal stories and immersive exhibitions that place visitors at the heart of history.
A Museum Beneath the City
One of the museum's most distinctive features is its architecture. While the striking leaning tower rises above the skyline, the main exhibition is located 14 metres underground, symbolizing a journey into the past.
Covering more than 6,000 square metres, the permanent exhibition is one of the largest historical museum displays in the world. Instead of following only the chronology of battles, it explores the causes of the war, daily life under occupation, acts of resistance, the Holocaust, forced deportations and the long-lasting consequences of the conflict.
More Than Military History
The museum's greatest strength lies in its personal perspective. Original photographs, handwritten letters, diaries, everyday household items and family keepsakes remind visitors that behind every historical event were ordinary people trying to survive extraordinary circumstances.
Look for the recreated wartime street, authentic personal belongings and multimedia testimonies that bring individual stories to life. These carefully designed spaces help visitors imagine how dramatically everyday life changed during the war.

A Place to Reflect
Although the exhibitions are rich in historical detail, the museum encourages reflection rather than simply presenting facts. Interactive displays, carefully reconstructed spaces and personal accounts invite visitors to consider not only what happened, but also how war affects individuals, families and entire societies.
Many visitors describe the experience as both educational and deeply moving, making it one of the most memorable museums in Poland.
Did You Now?
On 1 September 1939, the first day of World War II, German forces attacked Westerplatte and the Polish Post Office in Gdańsk. Today, both historic sites can be visited just a short distance from the museum.
Continue Exploring
The museum is located just a short walk from the Motława River, the European Solidarity Centre, the Polish Post Office Museum, the Crane (Żuraw) and Gdańsk's historic Old Town. Together, these landmarks tell the story of a city shaped by war, resilience, freedom and centuries of maritime history.
