Covering more than 6,000 square metres, the permanent exhibition is one of the largest historical museum displays in the world. Instead of following only the chronology of battles, it explores the causes of the war, daily life under occupation, acts of resistance, the Holocaust, forced deportations and the long-lasting consequences of the conflict.

The museum's greatest strength lies in its personal perspective. Original photographs, handwritten letters, diaries, everyday household items and family keepsakes remind visitors that behind every historical event were ordinary people trying to survive extraordinary circumstances.

Did You Now?

On 1 September 1939, the first day of World War II, German forces attacked Westerplatte and the Polish Post Office in Gdańsk. Today, both historic sites can be visited just a short distance from the museum.
