A Courtyard Made of Mirrors
Hidden just off Piotrkowska Street, Rose Passage turns an ordinary courtyard into one of Łódź's most unusual pieces of public art. Thousands of small mirror fragments cover the walls, windows and architectural details, catching sunlight and reflecting the people moving through the space.
Created by artist Joanna Rajkowska in 2014, the installation was inspired by her daughter, who underwent treatment for eye cancer. The mirrored surfaces became a symbol of seeing, perception and the different ways we experience the world.
Where Light Becomes Part of the Artwork
There is no single view of Rose Passage. Sunlight, clouds and the movement of visitors constantly change the reflections, turning the courtyard into something slightly different throughout the day.
The setting makes the experience even more unexpected. Hidden behind a historic building on one of Łódź's busiest streets, the passage feels like a small discovery rather than a conventional gallery. The closer you look, the more details appear in the fragmented reflections.
Rose Passage is a good example of Łódź's ability to turn an overlooked urban space into something memorable. You can walk through it in a few minutes, but the changing reflections make it surprisingly easy to stop and look a little longer.
