Sopot Pier is one of Poland's most iconic landmarks and the heart of the country's best-known seaside resort. Stretching 511.5 metres into the Gulf of Gdańsk, the wooden pier offers panoramic sea views, fresh coastal air, and a completely different perspective of Sopot.

A pier built for strolling

The story of Sopot Pier began in 1827, when French physician Jean Georges Haffner built the first wooden structure as part of his vision for a modern seaside spa. Originally measuring just over 30 metres, it was gradually extended as Sopot grew into one of the Baltic coast's most fashionable resorts. Today, it is the longest wooden pier in Europe.

Unlike many piers built for transport or fishing, Sopot Pier was created as a place to walk, relax, and enjoy the sea. Since the very beginning, visitors have come here to breathe the fresh coastal air, admire the views, and spend time by the water — a tradition that continues almost 200 years later.

The atmosphere that never changed

Although the pier has been rebuilt and expanded many times over the years, its character has remained remarkably similar. In the 19th century, evening walks along the wooden promenade were one of Sopot's favourite social traditions, with visitors gathering here to enjoy the sea breeze and meet friends.

Today, the atmosphere is much the same. Sailboats drift through the nearby marina, waves roll beneath the wooden deck, and the open waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk stretch towards the horizon. On clear days, it's even possible to see Gdynia and the Hel Peninsula in the distance.

One of the pier's best-kept secrets isn't something you can see. Thanks to its location above the water, the air contains a higher concentration of iodine than on the nearby beach, making every walk feel like a natural seaside inhalation — one of the reasons Sopot became a renowned spa destination in the first place.
