Stanisław Wyspiański Museum – Kraków Through the Artist's Eyes

A museum inside an old granary
It is easy to walk past the building on plac Sikorskiego without realising what is inside. The 18th-century Old Granary has had many lives — a storehouse, factory, shop, and later even a museum storage space. Since 2021, it has been home to the Stanisław Wyspiański Museum.
Inside is the largest collection of the artist's works in the world, with more than 1,100 objects. And that's where the visit becomes interesting: Wyspiański was never simply a painter.
An artist who refused to stay in one medium
Wyspiański worked across almost every artistic field imaginable. He painted portraits and landscapes, designed stained-glass windows and interiors, created furniture and theatre sets, wrote dramas and poetry, and worked in typography and book design.
The museum brings these different sides of his work together. Alongside paintings and drawings, visitors can see designs for some of Kraków's most important buildings, including the Franciscan Church and Wawel Cathedral, as well as theatre costumes, stage designs, furniture, and examples of his graphic work.
This makes the collection feel less like a traditional art exhibition and more like a look inside the mind of someone who wanted to shape almost everything around him.
Kraków seen through Wyspiański's eyes
Many of the works on display are deeply connected with Kraków. The city's churches, architecture, landscapes, and people repeatedly appeared in his work, while his designs helped shape some of the most recognisable interiors of the city.
The exhibition also explores recurring themes in his work, including nature, history, mythology, and modernity. His fascination with Kraków and its surroundings is particularly visible in his portraits and landscapes, while his monumental designs reveal his ambition to bring painting, architecture, and decorative art together.
There is also an unusual reason why the exhibition changes over time. Some of Wyspiański's works, especially his delicate pastel paintings on paper, are extremely sensitive to light. To protect them, the museum changes parts of the permanent display rather than keeping the same works exposed continuously.
So even if you've visited before, you may not see exactly the same museum twice.
