The Imperial Castle, Poznań

A former imperial residence in the heart of the city, now home to the ZAMEK Culture Centre.

The Imperial Castle with Many Lives

In the centre of Poznań stands a building that has changed its identity more than once. The Imperial Castle was built between 1904 and 1910 as the residence of Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia. Designed by architect Franz Heinrich Schwechten, its monumental Neo-Romanesque architecture was intended to project the power of the German Empire.

Despite being built as an imperial residence, Wilhelm II was in the castle only four times. The building was never simply a private home — from the beginning, it was designed as a symbol of imperial presence in Poznań.

From Emperor to Hitler

After Poland regained independence in 1918, the castle entered a completely different chapter. In 1919, it became one of the main seats of the newly established University of Poznań, while part of the former imperial apartments was designated for the Polish head of state.

The building was radically transformed again during the Second World War. In 1939, the Nazi authorities decided to turn it into a residence for Adolf Hitler and began a major reconstruction of the interiors. The former Imperial Throne Room was demolished and replaced by a monumental hall designed according to Nazi architectural principles. Hitler never actually visited the building.

A Castle for Culture

After the war, the castle narrowly avoided demolition. Instead, it became the seat of the city authorities in 1948 and later, in 1962, the Palace of Culture. In 1996, it was transformed into the ZAMEK Culture Centre.

Today, the historic interiors are filled with exhibitions, concerts, theatre, cinema and other cultural events. Some spaces still reveal the building's complicated past, including the former passage vestibule, where visitors can see elements from both the imperial and Nazi periods.

The castle's story is what makes it so unusual. Built to represent an empire, transformed by two very different political regimes and nearly demolished after the war, it now serves a completely different purpose — as a public space for art, culture and everyday life in Poznań.
