Wrocław Zoo
Wrocław Zoo is one of the city's biggest attractions and the oldest zoo in Poland, opened in 1865. Its history is closely connected with the city itself: during the Siege of Breslau in 1945, much of the zoo was destroyed and the grounds had to be rebuilt after the war. Today, it is home to around 12,000 animals representing more than 1,100 species, with a strong focus on conservation and the protection of endangered animals.
Afrykarium
Opened in 2014, the Afrykarium is the zoo's most recognisable attraction and is dedicated entirely to Africa's aquatic ecosystems. Its habitats range from the Red Sea to African rivers and the Mozambique Channel, with sharks, rays, hippos, manatees, crocodiles and penguins among the highlights. The underwater tunnel is particularly impressive, allowing visitors to walk beneath a huge tank while animals swim above and around them.
Old and new in one zoo
What makes the visit especially interesting is the contrast between the historic parts of the zoo and the modern Afrykarium. You can walk past buildings dating back to the early days of the garden and, a few minutes later, find yourself inside a large underwater world. With its combination of long history, conservation work and modern animal habitats, Wrocław Zoo is easily a place to spend several hours.
